Principle of cathodic protection
Corrosion of metals is a multi electrode coupled system. When the metal materials in contact with electrolyte solution, due to the electrochemical inhomogeneity on the surface of the metal, often form a corrosion cell. The galvanic corrosion cell can be simplified as a double electrode, therefore, cathodic protection can be realized through the following two methods.
1, the use of impressed current, make the entire surface of the protected metal structure of cathode, called the impressed current cathodic protection.

(1) the environment medium must be conductive. In soil, water, acid and alkali medium such as salt solution can implement cathodic protection, but are not in the gas medium. Gas-liquid interface, dry-wet alternate parts protection effect is not good. In strong acid solution, due to protect current consumption is too big, also shoulds not be commonly use cathodic protection method.
(2) the metal material of the medium should be easy to cathodic polarization, or because of the consumption current is large and not suitable for the cathodic protection method. In a passive state of metal in the medium, cathodic protection should not be adopted.
(3) the protected metal structure geometry too complicated, otherwise the protection current distribution, a local phenomenon of inadequate protection or protection.
Current cathodic protection method is mainly used in the following media:
A: freshwater and seawater, prevent the ship, wharf, platform, gate and cooling equipment corrosion.
B: alkali and salty solutions, to prevent the reservoir, the erosion of the evaporation tank, alkali boil pot, etc.
C: in soil and mud, to prevent the corrosion of pipelines and cables, etc.
